Remember THIS?

Ahhh, December: traditionally the month of seven nights out a week and embarrassing-slash-brilliant memories aplenty. Phoebe Luckhurst laments the sadly party-free party season of the next month or so, and looks forward to a time when we can all let loose again

With the benefit of hindsight, I’m immeasurably glad that the last time I went dancing — in late February, when a flu-like pandemic was still the flimsy substance of B-movie plots — I did it properly.

By properly, I mean a gay club in Leith with old and dear friends, on the kind of night where one of them finds you in the loos at 1.30am taking selfies with a new acquaintance to whom you are declaring undying love (she complimented me on my eye make-up).

By properly, I mean hours of sloshing weak gin and tonics down my front and smoking 20 cigarettes — shivering in a sleeveless dress in Edinburgh’s sub-zero chill — even though I ‘gave up’ two years ago. By properly, I mean calling it a night — finally — at 4am and tumbling into an Uber to a friend’s house, before sitting sprawled on the kitchen floor, inhaling a loaf’s worth of toast and Marmite between four. Mere weeks later, being pressed up against perspiring strangers — their breath hot as they chanted along to disco — would have been unthinkable.
