Skincare expert Susanne Kaufmann shares her top tips for combatting winter-tired bodies

Your daily skin care and body care regime can play a huge part in protecting your skin against dryness, especially in winter. People often neglect caring for the skin on their body in the same way they do their face and as a result it can become irritated, red, and uncomfortable.

The increased use of central heating only adds to these concerns during the colder months. It’s important to keep the balance of lipids and moisture in the skin. If one of these two factors are neglected, skin can become rough, itchy, and tight.

1. Layering your body care

Just like skincare for your face, the body needs layers of hydration in the winter to maintain the moisture levels in the skin. With its unique active power, my new Toning Body Serum, used as a body treatment, enhances the detox benefits of an improved diet and the skin-firming effects of regular workouts. Apply to arms, legs and other parts of the body that might need extra care and follow with a rich cream. I like to do this just before bed to hydrate, tighten and firm the skin overnight.

2. Using compression tights

With gyms shut, I like to apply a powerful body serum and then put-on compression tights or leggings and go on a brisk walk outside. Wolford’s VELVET 100 Support Leggings perfectly shape the silhouette of the legs to effectively support circulation. The combination of a body serum, tights, and light exercise results in a lymphatic massage. After the walk, relax and elevate your legs for about five minutes. This will be good for both the mind and body.

3. Experimenting with cold showers

Hydration is key for locking in moisture. I always recommend following a bath or shower with a nourishing body cream or oil. You can experiment too. A bath in the colder months is a great way to nourish the skin as you can select an accompanying product that will heal, relax, or even energise a tired body. Conversely, if you can brave it, a cold shower is great for the body and mind. I advise starting with a cold leg shower if you’re fearful, which will revive the body and encourage circulation.

Team this with Byredo’s La Tulipe Body Wash to awaken the senses and invigorate the feeling in Spring on a dull, cold morning. Following one of these, apply a body cream such as our new Restorative toning Body Cream. It’s developed with extracts of the Jiaogoulan plant (immortality herb) and rock rose which makes it a luxurious and hard-working cream that strengthens the skin's natural barrier against external influences and free radicals, helping the skin look plumper, firmer, and more even.

4. Body brushing

Body brushing is a gentle and natural way to stimulate the lymphatic system and increase circulation and energy. It’s also a natural way to exfoliate the skin priming it perfectly for hydrating care to optimise the amount of product absorbed by the skin. Start at your feet and brush upward toward the heart. Take care not to apply too much pressure, especially if the skin is chapped or irritated. Apply gentle, small strokes upward, or work in a circular motion.
