Evening Standard summer party, The Londoner Hotel

And just like that, we were back. On Monday 19 July the worlds of politics, media, hospitality and the arts convened at Jasminder Singh and his family’s glossy, glitzy new Londoner hotel, in Leicester Square, for something they’d not had in 18 months — an old-fashioned party. Albeit with new twists, thanks to jabs, lateral flows and super-powered air-con.

Among those enjoying the plush surroundings were actresses Anna Friel, recently back from her second home in Mallorca, and Miriam-Teak Lee,
there with number-one
fan, her mum.

Tim Davie, the BBC director general, was svelte in a crisp white shirt. New Southbank Centre boss Misan Harriman posed with author Candice Brathwaite in eye-catching red.
Journalists were out in force, including the BBC’s Emily Maitlis, ITV’s Robert Peston, Charlotte Edwardes of The Times and Sarah Harris, Vogue’s deputy editor. Activists Nimco Ali and Soma Sara, the founder of Everyone’s Invited, made the bash, too.

So did political movers and shakers. Tory Party co-chair Ben Elliot, vaccines minister Nadhim Zahawi, Paul Scully, Tulip Siddiq and David Lammy were there along with three Johnsons — Stanley, Rachel and Jo. Sadly, Rishi Sunak and Munira Mirza had to pull out as they were self-isolating.
Champagne, cocktails and canapés, how we’ve missed you.
